An acne diet sounds like a wonderful idea. Who hasn't heard that eating chocolate may make you break out. Everybody has. As a result, it does not seem so far-fetched that what you eat could prevent acne instead of cause it.

However, an acne diet can be a hard thing to develop. It is highly personal and based on your body’s unique responses to food. There are guidelines, but your progress will largely be trial and error. Watch your skin carefully. Write it all down. You could keep a photo journal. When your skin clears, continue on the diet you were on at the time.

The following are some easy guidelines to help get you started on an acne diet:

1. Up your intake of protein. Many dermatologists are under the belief that protein is connected with clearer skin. This is because protein contains an enzyme that limits the production of oil. Oily skin tends to be more prone to breakouts.

2. Keep away from carbohydrates. Its not necessary to cut out all carbohydrates. But you do need to limit them so that they are only about 40 percent of your diet. This is because carbohydrates have compounds in them that can stimulate oil production. This is why junk food has a reputation for causing acne. In reality junk food just has a high carb content.

3. Try to drink green tea. If at all possible try to drink the real stuff. Brewing the green tea is the best way to drink it. But, if you really don't like it, the natural green tea drinks will work. Green tea will restrain the production of androgen. Androgen is a hormone that will wreak havoc on your skin.

4. Limit your salt intake. Salt most always contains iodine. This is why table salt is usually called “iodized salt.” Iodine can be one of the biggest inflammatory agents in people with acne.

In addition to watching your diet, you should carefully watch what you put on your face. If you currently have acne, you are more aware than most of what is contained in your beauty products. Look for oil-free moisturizers and natural or organic skin care lines. These are least likely to cause a breakout. If you wear makeup you may want to consider switching over to mineral makeup. Dermatologists are under the belief that mineral makeup can fully help alleviate your acne problems while enhancing the results of your acne diet.
